Thank You To Our Team!

thank you on post it green background Thank you to our incredible team!

We wanted to take a moment to share just how much we appreciate our team. The past year has shown extraordinary circumstances that have proven challenging for everyone from our customers to our dedicated staff.

In the restoration industry, hard-working and dedicated employees are hard to come by. Our crew works in difficult conditions - cleaning homes after a fire, cleaning a COVID-19 positive office, dealing with a sewage backup, etc. They are also on call throughout the day, a large commitment that not all are willing to make to help others in their time of need.

Cleanup and Restoration also requires our technicians to be trained in a multitude of fields and to have the certifications necessary to work at our office. In addition to their service knowledge, our technicians also provide exemplary customer service to our customers- many of whom are distraught about their property damage or their safety.

Our technicians are an incredible group of people who show up day after day ready to help. They couldn't do their jobs, however, without the support of our office staff. In our office, the phones are always ringing and when our staff answers a call, they know that on the other end are people who might be in the midst of a challenging time.

The employees in our office are well versed in the in's and out's of the water, fire and mold damage restoration industry. They work hard every day to help our customers through the restoration process.

From our technicians on the field to the dedicated staff that helps to coordinate and schedule our jobs, we are so thankful. Cheers to everyone in our office as we celebrate this New Year!

What you should know about mold after a storm

8/5/2020 (Permalink)

mold on the wall Mold can develop quickly after a flood

Hurricane season is most definitely upon us! The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season is the first on record in which nine tropical storms formed before August 1st.  As most of you living in NYC know, Tropical Storm Isaias blew through the streets of the city on Tuesday afternoon with fast winds and heavy rain.  New York City’s power utility said it saw more outages from Isaias than from any storm except Superstorm Sandy in 2012.  Isaias closed bridges, halted commuter trains and sent thousands of trees limbs crashing down on homes, cars and streets of New York.

The SERVPRO midtown Manhattan crew was dispersed throughout the city cleaning up the immediate aftermath of the storm.  Responding instantly to a storm of any speed or magnitude is our specialty, however we also pride ourselves in handling the residual damage caused by a storm that may not be so visible, a fungus known as mold.

After a natural disaster such as a tropical storm or hurricane that causes flooding or standing water, tons of excess moisture can contribute to the growth of mold.  Mold can grow in homes and buildings and can produce allergens and irritants. Mold can develop within a little as 24-48 hours after water exposure and what’s worse is that it will continue to grow until steps are taken to stop it. If your home or building has been flooded, or has been exposed to excessive moisture after the storm you may be at risk for mold, even if you have since dried the area.

We do not recommend that you dry the area yourself. Water damage mitigation if not done properly can create mold growth after a storm. It can create a constant mold problems if property is not dried out completely and there is a high change it will begin to grow on material such as drywall, studs, carpeting and insulation, which can be extremely costly to replace once it is damaged. We do not recommend you try and remove the mold yourself with bleach or any other disinfectants.  Our SERVPRO professionals use anti-fugal and antimicrobial treatments to eliminate mold colonies to help prevent new colonies from forming. We at SERVPRO midtown do mold testing and safe mold remediation. You can call us at SERVPRO for immediate service 212-768-9400.

What you should know about mold. Mold can enter though heating and air conditioning systems. It can enter though vents, widows and open doorways. It can also attach itself to shoes and clothing and be carried indoors. When mold spores drop on a place with excessive moisture where leakage might have occurred the mold with then grow.

Usually mold can be seen or smelled, mold often produced a strong, musty oder. During SERVPRO’s inspection and mold damage assessment various technologies will be used to detect mold and hidden water sources.

We at SERVPRO are at your service at a moments notice when it comes to water damage or flooding after a storm.  However mold can infest your home in a more subtle, insidious way.  Here are some helpful tips on how to keep mold from entering your home and preventing it from spreading throughout.

  • Make sure your roof gutters and roof are cleaned frequently
  • Check under potted indoor plants to make sure water does not accumulate
  • Remove or replace wet carpets or rugs that are not drying properly
  • Increase ventilation and air flow as often as possible especially when showering, cooking, using the dishwasher or clothes dryer
  • Use de-humidifiers and fans to help remove excess moister and condensation
  • Whenever there is a spill or leak, clean it up immediately

If you do detect mold in your home or building SERVPRO midtown is here for you. Call us anytime at 212-768-9400. We provide a 24/7 emergency service with highly trained specialists who will come to inspect and assess right away. STAY SAFE!

WHAT IS AN AIR MOVER?

A major piece of drying equipment which is used by restoration professionals during water damage restoration and drying projects. Despite it's prevalence, many people don’t know how this unit works, or how to select the best one for their project. Air movers have a few alternative names, such as blower fans, commercial air blowers or air mover fans. They’re used to increase air circulation, which speeds up water evaporation and reduces drying time, compressed air is used to maximize airflow.

ADVANTAGES OF AIR MOVERS

Their low power draw means that they’re safe to use in a wide variety of settings, and it makes ideal for water damage restoration projects. Compared to other types of fans, these units also have high velocity, which makes them ideal for cooling and ventilation purposes.

AIR MOVERS USAGE

With these advantages, it’s no surprise that air movers are used in so many industries.

Some of their many applications include:

  • Reducing water damage to carpets and floors
  • Drying carpets for carpet technicians
  • Flood and disaster restoration projects
  • Drying concrete and paint
  • Improving ventilation in large areas
  • Removing fumes or gases from a work space

There are some truly creative uses for air movers, but most of them fall into a few basic categories:

  • Drying: Drying is one of the most common usages.

By rapidly increasing air circulation, commercial air movers promote evaporation. Rapid air circulation is critical for shortening drying times. An air mover can reduce carpet drying time to a more than 20 minutes. Industrial models also make it feasible to dry large areas quickly.

  • Curing Concrete and Paint: Industrial air movers are also widely used in the construction industry.

They speed up the concrete setting and cut down on how long it takes paint to cure. Air movers are an odorless, fast alternative to chemical admixtures and they are particularly useful in humid areas where concrete and paint tend to sweat as it dries.

  • Removing Fumes: Because of their high-powered blowers, air movers are used to remove fumes or gases from an area.
  • Blowing: These units can also be used to ventilate large work spaces or cool engines and other equipment.

Pet Safety In the Winter Months

We love our furry family

Pet Safety During the Winter
At SERVPRO of Midtown Manhattan, we know that your pets are an important part of your family. Most pets in NYC are indoor animals, but it is a common sight to see the dog owner's of New York walking their animals as they return from work. Animals are prone to the same winter hazards as human beings, especially cold and ice. Here are some tips for keeping your family pet safe.

Limit outdoor time on bitter cold days. Try to go out when the sun in shining. Even with fur, animals can become too cold and go into hypothermia.

Avoid the ice. Animals can slip and fall just like you. More importantly, animals cannot recognize the danger of breaking through thin ice on frozen water. It is always better to keep your pet on a leash during the winter to help them steer clear of hazards.

Wipe their paws when you come inside. The streets and sidewalks of New York are often treated with salt or other de-icers. These substances can irritate your animal's paws. Some can be toxic, which is especially dangerous if your pet licks its paws.

People and pets want a safe place inside for the cold months. If a winter emergency like a burst pipe makes your home unsafe, contact SERVPRO of Midtown Manhattan. We are here to help the residents of NYC quickly get their homes back to normal.

The new SERVPRO tool for destroying Odor

9/6/2016 (Permalink)

As a trusted leader in the restoration industry, SERVPRO of Midtown Manhattan now introduces new tool of odor destruction. One of the most annoying things is an unpleasant odor, be it at home, office or any other place. SERVPRO of Midtown Manhattan understands the frustration you go through trying to get rid of the odor and thus introduces a new tool that will make sure the odor is gone for good.

With the use of hydroxyl generator, you are assured that the odor will be gone by the time we are through. Previously, deodorization was done using masking agents, filters and other ineffective methods. However today with the latest technology we assure our customers perfection, by using hydroxyl generator. The generator is a new technology that beats all the other methods. It is able to:

  • Cleans all air and all spaces in a contained room
  • Produce atmospheric hydroxyls that are strong enough to neutralize bacteria and viruses.
  • Hydroxyls are able to penetrate into porous materials, fabrics and anywhere else as needed.

However strong the odor is the hydroxyl generator will be able to kill it. It produces hydroxyl molecules that are a composition of chemicals that are powerful. These molecules can penetrate to the furthest edge of the house restoring its original scent.

It's Never too Late To Go Green

7/26/2016 (Permalink)

NYC, Lets go green!

You are environmentally aware. You recycle and limit the fuel you use to cut down on your carbon footprint. But you want to do more to help the environment and keep you and your Manhattan family away from harsh chemicals. Have you thought about what you're using to clean your home or business? Most commercial cleaners contain dangerous corrosives that overpower the stain but also your system. Carpet cleaners have perchlorethylene or ammonium hydroxide which can cause liver and respiratory problems. Even the tried and true cleaners that have been in use for generations--bleach and ammonia--have negative effects on living tissue.

Increase your Green Awareness

In an area the size of New York City, we inhale or ingest dangerous chemicals many times daily. The soap residue of carcinogenic cleaners is left on surfaces around Manhattan, introducing millions of people to nasty chemicals. But by becoming aware of what you use to clean your home or business, you can minimize your exposure to these chemicals.

"Green" cleaners like those produced by Nature's Source, Meyers and Green Works are becoming more popular as people in New York City and other large cities around the country realize that they have the ability to make things better for future generations. While green products vary in the exact ingredients they use and the name they go by, all green products have some things in common:

  • They are not tested on animals
  • Active Ingredients are "all natural" and non-toxic
  • They are made from recycled products or are biodegradable
  • The companies that produce them follow eco-friendly ideals

SERVPRO of Midtown Manhattan understands your need to avoid dangerous chemicals and contribute to a healthy environment. Our professional cleaners promote environmentally safe practices and products to keep New York City beautiful for future generations.

Harzardous Harms of Asbestos

7/20/2016 (Permalink)

Asbestos is a mineral fiber that is known to be extremely dangerous. While many know that asbestos is hazardous, they may not know of the harms that can come from asbestos and how important it is to get rid of asbestos.

  • Shortness of breath: Your respiratory tract is where you will most commonly find issues when you have been exposed to asbestos. Shortness of breath is the main symptom that you will find from someone that has been exposed to asbestos.

  • Mesothelioma: This is a rare lung cancer; you will often see symptoms of shortness of breath and chest pain. You may also experience abdominal mesothelioma which can result in weight loss, pain and swelling in the abdomen, bowel obstruction, fever, anemia and more.

  • Lung cancer: The symptoms of lung cancer you may see from asbestos include hoarseness, wheezing, coughing or coughing up blood, persistent chest pain, anemia and weight loss as well.

Asbestos is extremely harmful… inhaling the fibers that are released when there is asbestos around can lead to serious disease and it may even lead to death. You need to make sure you get rid of asbestos immediately after you it has been detected to avoid these hazards.

Spring Cleaning is an important part of everyone’s routine this time of year, SERVPRO of Midtown Manhattan wants everyone to remember that mold can cause health effects. Here are some signs that you may have a mold problem in your home.

  • Visual: Mold can come in many colors such as black, white, green, orange, and purple. It can also come in many shapes and sizes such as slimey green or black spots, a film on surfaces that frequently come in contact with moisture, or patches.

  • Non Visual: Mold needs darkness, dampness, and a food source in order to reproduce.

    • Crawl Spaces are a prime location for mold. We would advise having a professional assess your crawl space for any possible mold problems.

    • Large appliances that use water such as your washing machine or dishwasher could have mold behind them if there has been any leakage from the running water.

    • Pipes in your home could have leaked and left water behind your walls, if you can see water damage on your walls there is the possibility of mold.

    • Bathrooms due to their constant exposure to water allow for mold growth especially if your fixtures are not properly sealed, allowing for water to drip behind tubs, showers, and sinks creating a hospitable environment for mold.

    • HVAC systems should be regularly inspected for mold in addition to changing filters regularly.

Christmas Safety Tips Brought to You by SERVPRO of Midtown Manhattan

Safety Never Takes a Holiday… and either does SERVPRO of Midtown Manhattan, 24/7 Emergency Service that is Faster to Any Size Disaster

Oh Christmas Tree…

  • Try to purchase a freshly cut tree, as they are more resistant to ignition.
  • Keep your Christmas tree watered and away from any heat source such as fireplaces, radiators, candles, or heat vents.
  • Below is a list of electrical safety tips to keep your Christmas Tree problem free!
  •  Lights, Camera, Action…

  • Carefully inspect holiday light strings each year and discard any with frayed cords, cracked lamp holders, or loose connections. When replacing bulbs, unplug the light string and be sure to match voltage and wattage to the original bulb.
  • Always turn off holiday lights when you leave the house unattended or when going to bed.
  • When purchasing light strings, extension cords, spotlights, electrical decorations, gas appliances, or carbon monoxide alarms, look for the certification mark of an accredited certification organization such as CSA International, UL, or ELT to ensure that the products comply with applicable standards for safety and performance.
  • Rock it down to the Electric Avenue…

  • Never connect more than one extension cord together; instead use a single cord that is long enough to reach the outlet without stretching, but not so long that it can get easily tangled.
  • Use an outdoor timer certified by CSA International to switch lights on and off. Lights should be turned on after 7 p.m. to avoid the electricity rush hour.
  • Test your smoke alarms monthly to make sure they work, and be sure to install smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms on every level of your home -- especially near sleeping areas.
  • Christmas Clean Machine…

  • To help prevent CO hazards in your home, have SERVPRO of Midtown Manhattan perform a yearly maintenance check of your furnace and venting system, and clean or replace your furnace filter frequently during the heating seasons.
  • Do not store combustible materials such as gasoline, propane, paper, chemicals, paint, rags, and cleaning products near your gas furnace. Gasoline or propane cylinders should be stored outside the home.
  • The National Fire Protection Association recommends that chimneys be swept at least once a year at the beginning of the winter to remove soot and debris. Call SERVPRO of Midtown Manhattan to clean your chimney and check it for damage.
