candles dimly lit Candles are a beautiful, yet potentially dangerous edition to any home. Here's why!

While candles are beautiful and a wonderful edition to any apartment, a lit candle is also an open flame. Candles are a potential fire hazard if not carefully monitored when lit. In fact, an estimated 8,200 home fires are started by candles each year according to the National Fire Protection Association.

A study by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission suggests that 85 percent of candle fires could be avoided if consumers followed three basic safety rules:

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Never burn a candle on or near anything that might catch fire.
  • Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Never use water to extinguish a candle
  • Never use a candle as a night light or while you may fall asleep.

Those are our candle fire safety tips! Despite taking caution and being careful, mistakes can happen. If you do experience fire damage, give us a call at 212-768-9400.
