Five months after New York City shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, gyms and fitness centers are finally set to re-open. Luckily, those looking to stay active have taken advantage of the warm weather, working out at the park or running in the streets. While a delight for some, many have wondered when they will be able to return to their building or neighborhood's local gym. As September arrives, many New Yorkers have begun to wonder where they will go to stay active once the temperature drops this Fall.

Suffice to say, it has not been an easy journey for fitness centers to get the green light to reopen. There were several delays in order to allow adequate time for required local health department virtual inspections. The result of which put many gyms, in particular small family-owned, out of business.  The Governor’s announcement that health clubs could reopen came with several caveats, subject to rigorous health and safety standards including that facilities be limited to the third of their capacity and face masks be worn at all times.

To accommodate physical distancing and create a safe environment, gyms are requiring members to book up to seven days in advance with the right to implement more stringent policies for members who repeatedly miss their booked visits.  Before each club visit and check-in, you must acknowledge and consent to a health declaration an hour prior to your scheduled check-in time, if you are experiencing any symptoms you will not be permitted in the club.  Temperature checks will be required upon each entry to the clubs and a strict no quests policy will be enforced. Classes are indefinitely suspended.

Though there are many new specific rules in place for public gyms to reopen, landlords, and building managers are struggling to work out the logistics of inviting residents back into amenity spaces safely. This will include being vigilant on cleaning and disinfecting practices in order to pass inspection and remain open.

We at SERVPRO of Midtown Manhattan have a solution, our new defensive pathogen cleaning program, Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned. This is a proactive viral pathogen cleaning. With over 50 years of experience in biochemical spill remediation and decontamination, you can trust SERVPRO professionals to bring a higher standard of clean to the places we gather, especially places like gyms with shared equipment.
